Introduction

My paper went through many forms before ending up at the final copy. At first, I tossed some wildly different ideas around that experiencing a culture without having to travel. I was thinking about possibly talking about birth control, or how labeling students “special Ed” negatively impacts their self-esteem or a paper on random acts of kindness. I could build a great narrative paper about all of those but when it came to finding research on these topics I had some difficulty. Then I decided to talk about my experiences overseas because there is so much to learn from other cultures. I was not sure if I should isolate a certain experience for my paper. I toyed with the idea of talking about my experience in Honduras and all the research I did on the islands, but that would have launched into a full-on case study paper, but while I was reminiscing about Honduras I remember how (even if some were tourist traps) how nice the locals were and how they brought us into their culture and taught us about how they live. That is when I thought why don’t I talk about experiencing the culture. I wanted to write this paper because people can be so afraid of the world but there are so many beautiful and wonderful experiences but because of “this that and the other thing” they cannot possibly travel to another country so I added in the feature of not having to leave your home town to experience the culture. I knew I always wanted to write about Art & Music, and then Food. The last “solution” was more difficult. I thought about doing a section on eating food with people of other cultures, but that was too similar to just “food” as a topic, Then I thought about pen pals but there is no scientific study behind that. At the end of the day, I ended up talking about Literature.
