Q: “”I will be with you on your wedding night.” that then was the period fixed for the fulfillment of my destiny. In that hour I should die, and at once satisfy and extinguish his malice. “
C: After Victor abandons the monster and lets him wander the harsh world the monster, obviously has some hard feelings toward Victor. The monster murders Victor’s younger brother and frames one of the helpers, Justine. This has brought Victor’s indirect kill count to two.
All the monster wants is someone like him to love so he won’t be alone, he wants a bride. We then have this huge moment where victor realizes that maybe the two could reproduce and have many monster babies or they might not even like each other sterile to begin with, or acting as the right wingman for the monster, Victor destroys the bride halfway through her creation. Victor doesn’t just tears up the bride he brutalizes her and tells the monster no way is he making him a bride. This is when the monster promises to be with Victor on his wedding night. OBVIOUSLY, the monster is talking about killing victor, and not getting even by killing victors bride.
Victor is so self-obsessed that he cannot see the obvious connection here but settles with the fact that everything is always about him. Even when Clarval shows up dead the next morning and victor is framed for murder, victor doesn’t consider that the monster might make good on his promise to kill everyone victor has ever loved. The monster has experienced nothing but cold and abuse and wants to make Victor feel the same way he does, he gives victor a chance to be left alone if he could have a bride but Victor once again denied him some companionship.
Q: I think it is really interesting that one of the reasons why victor doesn’t give the creature a bride is the fact that they might not get along. I think it’s pretty cool that Shelly included this in the book because when most authors introduce a love interest for a man (or woman) it’s this perfect instant connection. So the creature may love the way his bride looks they totally could not get along and that is a scary thought for him.
